Everybody knows about Elon Musk, Tesla Motors’ founder, but who is Kimbal Musk? If you don’t know who he is, he is the brother of Elon Musk. He is a businessman, a philanthropist, and a restaurateur. He is very successful at what he does, and he owns many businesses.
Early Life of Kimbal Musk
Kimbal was born on September 20, 1972, in South Africa. He grew up with his brother Elon and his sister Tosca. His mother, Maye was a dietician and his father had an engineering practice.
He went to high school in Pretoria, South Africa, and after finishing it, he went to Kingston, Ontario to University. He graduated from Queen’s University in 1995, and while he was still in school he worked at Scotiabank.
Kimbal Musk’s Career
Kimbal started his career very early. His first business was a residential painting business, College Pro Painters, and it made him around $50,000.
Alongside his brother Elon, he launched Zip2, a precursor to Google Maps. Zip2 was sold to Compaq in 1999.
After that, the brothers invested in X.com, an online banking site, that happened to become PayPal. In 2002 eBay acquired PayPal, but it is not known how much Kimbal got.
He probably got enough money to be able to not work ever again, but he decided to do something different. He enrolled in the French Culinary Institute. After a few years, he opened The Kitchen, a chain of restaurants that serve farm-to-table recipes. Some say that this is Kimbal’s best business venture.
But he still managed to have other business adventures, like in 2006 when he was appointed CEO of an online advertising agency, OneRiot. He decided to quit OneRiot four years later, after an injury.
Kimbal created Learning Gardens, an educational nonprofit that will teach school children about agriculture.
Besides all of this, he was on the board of Chipotle Mexican Grill and still is a chairman of Tesla Motors and SpaceX. He is also a chairman of an urban farming company, Square Roots.
Kimbal Musk’s Personal Life
From the 2000s to 2010 Kimbal was married to Jen Lewis, an interactive artist, and architect. She helped him a lot, she co-founded The Kitchen with him and was a designer of the Learning Gardens. The two of them have three children together.
In April 2018, Kimbal married Christiana Wyly, an environmental activist and the daughter of a billionaire Sam Wyly.

His brother Elon is known to be a billionaire, but is Kimbal as rich as his brother? The other Musk brother, Kimbal is not that rich as his brother, but he is wealthy and successful. It is estimated that the current net worth of Kimbal Musk is around $130 million, but that is changing rapidly. That means that with changes in the market and the investing in businesses Kimbal makes, his net worth changes.
